Phnom Penh itself is a colourful and enjoyable place. French style cafes line the riverfront, the baguettes and coffee are superb and the magnificent Royal Palace is a must-see. Many tourists feel it necessary to see the Killing Fields outside the city and the Tuol Sleng museum (once a detention centre) but one mind-numbingly tragic sight is surely enough.
